Acupuncture What is acupuncture and how does it work?
Acupuncture involves the
insertion of very fine needles under the skin. The theory behind
Acupuncture is based on the ancient Chinese concept of Yin and Yang,
when these two forces are in balance, health is maintained, when they
are out of balance, there will be pain and disease. In simple terms, Acupuncture
activates the body’s own natural healing system; it alerts the body to
problem areas and focuses the healing response to these particular areas
within the body. Within Chinese Medical theory, the whole body is connected via an intricate web of channels, these channels are referred to as the ‘meridian system’. They are responsible for the connection and smooth communication between all the different bio-systems and organs within the body. In the healthy horse, they maintain balance, nourishment and the smooth flow of circulation and energy. This smooth flow of energy can be blocked by injury, stress or disease and thus pain or discomfort will occur.
So how does sticking needles under the skin help?
In short, Acupuncture helps to
resolve these blockages that are causing the problem by regulating the
flow of energy under the skin and increasing circulation in the area.
This in turn has a flow on effect along the meridian to other areas
within the body. Acupuncture is especially
useful for muscular-skeletal disorders such as:
It can also be an effective
treatment for internally generated disease such as digestive upsets,
emotional or temperament problems, respiratory disorders and chronic,
hard to shift complaints.
